Newport-Mesa could shuffle three principals

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District plans to shuffle principals at three campuses if the school board approves the move Tuesday.

Rea Elementary School’s principal Anna Corral would take over the top job at TeWinkle Middle School, replacing Rich Rodriguez who would become principal at Newport Elementary School.

The district would start an open recruitment process for a new principal at Rea, and it’s undecided where Newport Elementary School principal Amy Nagy would land, according to district officials.

“As happens each year when we approach the conclusion of a school year, some staffing decisions remain in flux until such time as all transitions have occurred,” a statement announcing the changes said Friday. “Dr. Nagy’s official role for 2013/14 is still to be determined based on needs yet to be reconciled.”

Corral has been Rea’s principal since 2008 and was previously a middle school and high school administrator.

“[Corral’s] K-12 strengths make her a natural fit to transition to the role of principal of TeWinkle Middle School,” the district said.

Rodriguez has been at the helm of TeWinkle since 2010 after working as principal at Newport Coast Elementary.

“His legacy for leading his instructional team into developing a strong professional learning community is still present at Newport Coast Elementary today,” according to the statement.

Nagy has been principal of Newport Elementary since 2004.

Pending approval, the changes are scheduled to take place July 14.
