Annual Balboa Parade is Sunday
Go back in time and celebrate Balboa Island history with its 20th annual parade, themed “Balboa Island — Yesterday and Today,” on Sunday morning.
Today, lots on the island are estimated to be appraised at millions of dollars but were reportedly sold for as little as $25 in 1908, according to the Balboa Island Museum and Historical Society.
The annual island tradition includes decorated golf carts and floats, vintage cars, local children on bikes, dressed-up dogs, Keystone Cops portrayers, local drill teams and Corona del Mar’s marching band and drum line.
For a glimpse into Balboa Island history, visitors can stop by the Balboa Island Museum or, for a taste of Balboa Island today, check out Bluth’s Original Frozen Banana Stand.
The stand, as featured in the television show “Arrested Development,” will be making its final promotional stop near the Balboa Island fire station during the parade.
Paradegoers can join the after-party, which will feature surf musician Dean Torrence of Jan and Dean fame.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. but the bridge will close at 10:45 a.m. Pedestrian access will be limited to the ferry.
