OCC student wins writing award
An Orange Coast College student has been named one of two scholars in the state to win writing scholarships this year from the Community College Public Relations Organization of California.
Rachel Gajardo received the $1,000 award from the organization at its annual conference, according to a news release.
Gajardo won the prize for her commentary on campus sustainability initiatives, which was published in the Daily Pilot and Orange County Register last year.
The writing scholarship program is designed to encourage students to get published in a local newspaper.
Gajardo, who is also student body president at OCC, plans to transfer to UCLA in the fall to study English. She hopes to eventually become an English professor.
