A 41-year-old man died Sunday night after he was struck by a car in Newport Beach, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.

Authorities said the man, identified as Eric Williams, was on foot at about 8:30 p.m. when he was hit on West Coast Highway at Superior Avenue. Coroner’s officials had not released Williams’ city of residence as of Tuesday.

Williams had crossed most of the highway when a Mercedes-Benz sedan headed west ran into him along a dark stretch of roadway, police said. Williams was not in or near a crosswalk, authorities said.

The first officer on the scene began administering first aid before emergency crews arrived and took Williams to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died at 9:13 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, and police did not arrest or cite the driver, Manzella said.

Police are still investigating and said they could not immediately provide more details.
