Driver killed, passenger injured in rollover crash in Newport Beach
A driver was killed and his passenger seriously injured Monday afternoon in a single-car crash near the Newport Beach Police Department, according to authorities.
Their Mazda Miata was traveling south on Jamboree Road when it struck a concrete light pole after passing Santa Barbara Drive and flipped over at about 12:20 p.m., police said.
The driver was declared dead at the scene, police said.
His female passenger was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by firefighters before being taken to a nearby trauma center, according to police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella. The woman is expected to survive her injuries, Manzella said.
Police and the Orange County coroner’s office did not immediately release details about the people in the car.
Police shut down all of Jamboree’s southbound lanes in the area for hours. The road was reopened shortly after 4 p.m., according to the Police Department.
Maintenance crews cleaned up debris from the light fixture, which had been knocked to the ground.
Police are still investigating the crash, including how fast the Miata was traveling. They asked that anyone with information contact investigator Dave Darling at (949) 644-3746 or [email protected].
