Costa Mesa man sentenced in hit-and-run
A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday to crashing a stolen car into the living room of a Costa Mesa home in September.
Alfonso R. Campos, a Costa Mesa resident, was immediately sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years of probation, according to court records.
He pleaded guilty to unlawful taking of a vehicle, which is a felony, and misdemeanor hit-and-run. A third charge for driving without a valid license was dropped.
According to police, Campos slammed the stolen Ford Fusion into a home on Mendoza Avenue around midnight Sept. 9. The vehicle ended up embedded in the structure, authorities said.
The residents — a pregnant woman and her husband — were upstairs at the time and unhurt by the crash, police said.
The car’s driver fled the scene and remained on the lam for months.
Officials arrested Campos in February after linking him to the crash through DNA evidence, authorities said.
Police said Campos stole the car in Huntington Beach and that after his arrest admitted he’d been driving.
