2 arrested in Costa Mesa probation check
Costa Mesa police said they arrested two people during a sweep last week intended to make sure probationers in the city are complying with the terms of their release.
On April 27, officers from the Costa Mesa police and Orange County probation departments visited 13 homes where they contacted nine probationers who had been released under California’s prison realignment program. Under realignment, offenders determined to be non-violent and low-risk are placed under local supervision instead of the state’s. The program, which began in 2011, is designed to ease crowding in California prisons.
Since realignment began, Costa Mesa and Orange County law enforcement agencies have teamed periodically for probation checks throughout the city.
During last week’s sweep, officers arrested one person on suspicion of a probation violation and another on weapons allegations, police said. Authorities did not identify either person or provide details of the cases.
A sweep in March resulted in three arrests after checks on 11 probationers, officials said.
