Sanitation district to discuss organics recycling with public

The Costa Mesa Sanitary District will host three town hall meetings to inform people about its new organics recycling program, scheduled to begin later this year.

The program will require ratepayers to sort their trash and place organic matter — green waste and food scraps — in a separate container. The material will be converted into renewable natural gas in an effort to reduce landfill waste and meet anticipated state mandates.

The program is a change from the district’s single-bin, no-sorting-required system.

The sanitation district plans to provide each household with a cart for the organic matter between June 22 and Aug. 14, according to its website. It will also provide small kitchen pails for easy disposal of food scraps.

The second will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. May 16 at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave.

The third will be conducted from 6 to 8 p.m. June 2 at Back Bay High School, 390 Monte Vista Ave.
