Biz News: Owner selling Precision Motors after 29 years

After 29 years at Precision Motors in Westside Costa Mesa, owner Scott Hubbard is calling it quits and hitting the road.

The 62-year-old is selling his independent BMV/Mini service facility at 1650 Superior Ave. to Ron Inchausti, owner of another BMV/Mini repair store, Coast Motor Werk, which has locations in Huntington Beach, Irvine and Rancho Santa Margarita.

Hubbard, a Costa Mesa resident, said Precision Motors will eventually undergo a name change and get some interior upgrades to the shop, but will retain its employees. It will continue specializing in BMV/Mini services.

“I’ve left everybody in good hands,” he said. “Nobody’s losing because nothing’s leaving.”

Hubbard said certain tenets of his shop — providing oil changes, for example — are needed less often on newer BMV models, and it has changed his business dramatically.

Costa Mesa’s Westside along Superior is changing a lot too, he noted, with the addition of residential housing and fewer car-repair services and industrial sites.

In retirement, Hubbard said he wants to relocate to Northern California and potentially drive about, nomad-style.

“I’m going to decompress after 29 years in business,” he said. “As a small-business owner, I’ve never had a real vacation.”

He drives — what else? — a BMV. It’s a 1995 525i with 297,000 miles logged. It’s on its third engine and has a rebuilt transmission.

Hoag Women’s Health Institute recognized

The National Consortium of Breast Centers recognized Hoag Hospital’s Women’s Health Institute last month as the only Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence in Orange County for the second consecutive year.

When issuing the annual honor, the consortium compares the quality of performance in assessing patient care and allocating resources.

“In today’s dynamic health-care industry, breast centers are faced with providing quality care while simultaneously keeping costs under control,” said Dr. January Lopez, director of breast imaging at Hoag Health Center.

“A center’s staff must not only be familiar with existing standards of care but must also be aware of new advances in technology. Hoag actively ensures that it provides the best possible quality breast care to women in [its] community.”
