2 teens caught after jumping from car during chase, police say
Costa Mesa police say they chased down two teenagers who bailed out of a moving car when an officer tried to pull them over Thursday morning.
The pursuit started around 11:20 a.m. near Placentia and Adams avenues when a motorcycle officer noticed the car speeding by, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Matt Grimmond said.
The car’s driver briefly pulled over for the officer but then took off through a residential tract at speeds reaching 60 mph, according to police.
After a short chase, the driver and the lone passenger jumped from the vehicle while it was moving near the intersection of Tanager Drive and Kinglet Court, Grimmond said.
The car rolled over a curb and caromed off a home’s wall before it came to rest on the opposite sidewalk, according to police.
Grimmond said the driver didn’t make it far before being stopped by a bystander and taken into custody by police.
Officers quickly found the passenger on Placentia Avenue, Grimmond said.
The driver was released to his parents, and the passenger was taken back to class at a local high school, Grimmond said. Both are Costa Mesa residents, according to police.
