Around Town: Rand Paul to be in Newport for fundraiser

Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Rand Paul is expected to be in Newport Beach on Friday evening for a fundraiser at the home of Helena and Ron Sechrist.

Supporters are being asked to contribute up to $10,400 to a joint fundraising committee composed of Paul’s Senate reelection and political action committees, according to an invitation.

Paul, a first-term senator from Kentucky, announced his candidacy for the presidency on Tuesday. The son of former Rep. Ron Paul, a three-time presidential candidate, plans to barnstorm states that hold early GOP presidential nominating contests, including New Hampshire, South Carolina, Iowa and Nevada.

Pavement work to cause street closures

Pavement reconstruction will close parts of roads on the Balboa Peninsula and in Corona del Mar through Sunday.

In Corona del Mar, the work will close a portion of Ocean Boulevard between Jasmine and Iris avenues. Half the ramp to the Corona del Mar State Beach parking lot will be closed through Friday.

The work is part of a project that eventually will replace the pavement on Ocean Boulevard, which dates to 1927, according to the city.

On the Balboa Peninsula, Bay Avenue will be closed for pavement reconstruction between Seventh and Eighth streets, between Medina Way and Coronado Street, and between Cypress and Adams streets.
