Fairview Park committee to hear ideas for sports facilities

The Fairview Park Citizens Advisory Committee on Wednesday will hear initial concepts for adding sports facilities to the park, though it won’t be making a decision until next year.

While a majority of the committee voted in January to ask city staff to explore the idea of adding baseball and football fields to the 208-acre park’s southeast quadrant, the City Council later directed that the committee hold off on recommending any fields until an update of the city’s Open Space Master Plan of Parks and Recreation is completed.

Public Services Director Ernesto Munoz said the committee members will be able to use relevant information gathered from the master plan update in their decision-making.

The committee would then reconvene around spring 2016, and if it approves the fields, move the matter on to the Parks and Recreation Commission for more analysis and potentially to the City Council for final approval.

The advisory committee is scheduled to receive its presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave.
