Mock DUI crash part of school effort to counter drunk driving

Students at Newport Harbor High School saw the potential consequences of drunk driving when Newport Beach fire and police officials staged a mock DUI crash on campus Monday.

The enactment was part of the annual Every 15 Minutes Program, which intends to teach students about the possibly deadly results of mixing alcohol with driving.

On Tuesday, students continued the program by attending a mock funeral and presentations from guest speakers.

The program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It gets its name from an estimate in the early 1990s that every 15 minutes someone in the United States died because of an alcohol-related crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
