Man brandishing knife is arrested
Costa Mesa police arrested a 54-year-old man Thursday evening after he allegedly threatened a city resident with a knife near 19th and Pomona streets.
An officer was patrolling the area about 6:30 p.m. when he heard yelling and saw two men arguing.
One man was standing and pointing a knife at a 60-year-old Costa Mesa resident who was seated at a nearby bus stop, according to a news release from the Costa Mesa Police Department.
“Fearing a stabbing was about to occur, the officer acted quickly and detained the suspect with the knife,” police said in the release.
The officer arrested Kent Carvajal, whom officers believe is a transient from Costa Mesa, police said.
He was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats, according to the release.
Carvajal was being held on $50,000 bail at the Orange County Jail.
