Dad’s band turns tunes into fundraising
Community members are invited to sing and dance to golden oldies and contemporary tunes at a party from 6 to 10 p.m. today to benefit Sonora Elementary School in Costa Mesa.
The adults-only event will include a musical performance by Sonora Dads’ Band & Silverfox, whose performers include Sonora parents Ed Castillo, Rick Lancaster, Dan Maniaci, Tony Mascarenas, Rob Matian, Scott Nestel, Tim Taber and Suzie Thune.
Now in its third year, the event last year attracted about 150 people and raised approximately $4,000, said Tim Taber, a singer with the band.
Proceeds from this year’s party will go toward new lighting for Sonora theater productions, a sixth-grade promotion party and school beautification projects.
“We’re mostly 40 somethings, so you might hear a lot of ‘80s music,” Taber said. “It’s everything from Billy Idol to Van Halen.”
The musicians are part of the Sonora Dad’s Club, which started about four to five years ago and now numbers around 50 dads, said Katrina Foley, a Costa Mesa councilwoman.
“Their mission is to create memories and improve the school for their kids,” Foley said. “Often times their activities revolve around the arts. Many are artists and musicians themselves.”
The party will be held at Foley’s home at 1163 Salvador in Costa Mesa. A $10 cover includes one drink. An unlimited taco bar also will be available for $10.
