Children ages 9 to 15 competed in the last tryouts for this year’s Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program on Sunday at the Corona del Mar High School pool.

Participants were tested in a 100-yard swim and a three-minute treading water exercise.

The Junior Lifeguard program aims to teach children first aid, CPR, competition techniques and lifesaving methods and to recognize potentially hazardous surf conditions. The eight-week program starts the last week of June and ends in mid-August.
