Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush reportedly will conduct a fundraiser in Newport Beach on Monday on behalf of a super PAC benefiting his likely campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

The $25,000-per-couple “reception and discussion” will be held at the Pacific Club, according to The Washington Post.

Bush also will attend a reception and dinner Tuesday at the Bel Air home of Robert Tuttle, an ambassador to the Court of St. James in the George W. Bush administration, with a minimum requested donation of $25,000 per couple for the Right to Rise Super PAC, according to the Post.

A super PAC is a political action committee that may raise and spend unlimited amounts of money, including donations from corporations and unions, to campaign independently for candidates for federal office.

Women’s retreat this weekend in Costa Mesa

Laura Doyle, author of the New York Times bestseller “The Surrendered Wife,” will present a Cherished for Life Retreat for women from Friday to Sunday at the Ayres Hotel at 325 Bristol St. in Costa Mesa.

Diabetes fundraiser Saturday in Newport Beach

The annual JDRF Dream Gala is being presented Saturday evening by the Orange County chapter of JDRF, an international organization that raises money for research of Type 1 diabetes.

The event at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach is expected to attract 500 area business and philanthropic leaders.

It will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, music, auctions and drawings. Last year’s gala raised more than $1 million.

Saturday’s reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:30.

Shave head, raise money for cancer research

Those willing to sacrifice some hair to help raise money for childhood-cancer research can head to The Harp Inn in Costa Mesa on Sunday for a St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event that also will include live Irish music, a silent auction and raffles.

The foundation hopes to raise $60,000, largely through pledges collected by the volunteers.

The event will run from noon to 6:30 p.m. The Harp Inn is at 130 E. 17th St.

Dance contest raises $175,000 for children’s services

The Assistance League of Newport-Mesa’s eighth annual dance competition gala, “Dancing for Tomorrow’s Stars,” raised more than $175,000 for philanthropic services for needy children and families in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.

During the event Saturday night at City National Grove of Anaheim, community leaders paired up with professional ballroom dancers in a format similar to the ABC-TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” performing two 90-second routines for a panel of judges.

Mario Rodriguez, chairman of leadership development group Hispanic 100, was named Best Male Dancer, and opera singer Milena Kitic was chosen Best Female Dancer and won the Fan Favorite title in a vote of the audience.

Newport benefit raises $1.4 million for rights group

A benefit for the International Justice Mission held March 14 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach attracted about 400 guests and raised more than $1.4 million, according to the human-rights organization, which investigates reports of slavery, sex trafficking and other abuses and intervenes on behalf of victims.

Virtual Enterprise students win scholarships

Four Costa Mesa students who are part of the Costa Mesa High School Virtual Enterprise Youth Business program won scholarships to Long Island College during a business competition in San Francisco.

Seniors Perla Garcilazo, Aura Martinez, Stephanie Sanchez and Juan Valencia won scholarships ranging from $18,000 to $23,000, according to Mike Milchiker, who teaches the Virtual Enterprise class. He said the scholarship amounts could grow if the students raise their SAT scores.

The students were offerered the scholarships following interviews at a regional competition March 14 through 16 in San Francisco.
