Annual Spirit Run set for Sunday
Newport-Mesa residents are invited to participate Sunday in a variety of walks and runs to raise money for schools at the 32nd annual Newport-Mesa Spirit Run.
Held at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, the annual event includes 12 road-racing competitions, a toddler trot and a 5K Family Walk. Olympic runner Steve Scott is expected to run with children in the seven separate quarter-mile to 1-mile races, according to an announcement by race officials.
Attendees also can partake in a pancake breakfast and youth activities including a skateboard demonstration, rock climbing and a bungee trampoline.
Event proceeds support education and athletics in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. In the last four years, event organizers have donated upward of $200,000 to Newport-Mesa students and schools, according to the race website.
High school student clubs are also using the event to fundraise for special projects. CDM POWER (Protecting Our Women’s Educational Rights) is raising money to help build a school in Guatemala.
The cost of registration starts at $20. To register for Spirit Run, visit https://www.nmspiritrun.org.
