A neighbor armed with a gun confronted a would-be burglar breaking into a woman’s apartment in Costa Mesa on Sunday night, according to police.

Police said the neighbor noticed something suspicious at the apartment complex at 2320 Elden Ave. around 9:30 p.m.

He called police when he heard and saw a man break through a window of the woman’s apartment, Costa Mesa police spokesman Lt. Greg Scott said.

Scott said the neighbor armed himself with a handgun and took his brother along to confront the suspected burglar. When the two arrived, the suspect took out his own weapon, brass knuckles, according to police.

In response, the neighbor pointed his gun at the man and retreated to wait for officers to arrive, Scott said.

Officers found an uncooperative suspect, so they rushed him, taking him to the ground, and arrested him, Scott said.

Nobody was injured during the incident, according to authorities.

Police said they’re now investigating the possibility that the suspect is related to the woman who lives in the apartment.

More information on the suspect was not immediately available.
