Newport Beach Little League swings into spring season

Newport Beach Little League celebrated opening day of its spring season Saturday with the traditional parade of teams and opening games at Bonita Canyon Sports Park.

League board member Gregg Olson, a former Major League pitcher who was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1989 with the Baltimore Orioles, was the featured speaker at Saturday’s ceremonies.

The league, in its 32nd year, has 600 players and 48 teams registered for this season, plus two Challenger Division teams of special-needs players, according to board member David Porzio.
