Two attackers stabbed a man in Costa Mesa on Thursday afternoon, but the victim fought back and sent one of the assailants to a hospital, police said.

Officers responded around 3:45 p.m. to Placentia Avenue and Victoria Street, where they had been told three men were fighting.

Officers discovered that two men between 20 and 30 years old had stabbed a 40-year-old man with a knife during a robbery, police Lt. Vic Bakkila said.

During the struggle, the victim fought back using a skateboard and struck one of the attackers in the forehead, Bakkila said.

Paramedics took the 40-year-old to a local trauma center, according to police, who said they didn’t know how badly he was injured.

Officers arrested the man who was struck with the skateboard, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts on his head, according to authorities. Information about the man was not immediately available.

As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police had not found a second suspect or the knife used in the stabbing, Bakkila said.
