Charlie Palmer, a fine-dining establishment adjacent to Bloomingdale’s at South Coast Plaza, is shutting down after seven years at the Costa Mesa mall.

The restaurant’s last day is May 2, general manager Dan Prentice said. Holstein’s Shakes & Buns, a Las Vegas-based gourmet-burger restaurant, will open in the space sometime this summer after renovations.

With its contemporary vibe, Charlie Palmer was known for elegant interpretations of American fare, but a 2008 review in the Los Angeles Times chided the venue for falling short of the high bar set by other restaurants run by the Charlie Palmer Group in New York and Las Vegas.

The group operates more than a dozen restaurants in California, New York, Nevada, and Washington, D.C.
