Costa Mesa police arrested a motorist on suspicion of drunk driving and cited or arrested seven others for suspected license violations during a DUI check over the weekend.

About 2,600 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which was set up from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday on the northbound side of Newport Boulevard at Flower Street, police said.

Police screened about 400 of the vehicles, conducted 12 investigations of suspected cases of driving under the influence and impounded two cars, according to authorities.

As for the license violations, five were for driving without a license and two were for driving on a suspended or revoked license, police said.

DUI checkpoints are designed to deter drunk driving and are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
