A man was hospitalized Friday night after he fell about 40 feet from the cliff above a Corona del Mar beach, according to authorities.

Lifeguards and Newport Beach Fire Department personnel responded to a beach known as Pirate’s Cove at about 10 p.m. and took the man to Western Medical Center, police said.

The man complained of head and back pain after landing on the sand, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said, but she did not know his condition as of Monday morning.

Pirate’s Cove has been the site of other injuries from falls in the past.

In 2012, a man was hurt and his dog died after they slipped off rocks and fell about 35 feet to the beach.

A woman broke her leg in a fall in 2011, and a man did the same in 2010.
