Burger King will be out, Raising Cane’s chicken in on Harbor Boulevard
Costa Mesa planners approved a new fast-food restaurant this week that will replace a Burger King near the 405 Freeway.
The Burger King at 3150 Harbor Blvd. — the city’s only Burger King — will be replaced by Raising Cane’s, a Baton Rouge, La.-based chain that specializes in chicken tenders.
Raising Cane’s plans to demolish Burger King’s building, built in 1977, and construct a slightly larger one that’s about 3,800 square feet. The restaurant would stay open as late as 2 a.m.
Raising Cane’s, founded in 1996 in Baton Rouge, has more than 200 restaurants nationwide. The Costa Mesa location is part of the chain’s new expansion to California.
The restaurant is named after the founder’s dog, Raising Cane.
Representatives from Raising Cane’s could not specify Friday when construction on the Costa Mesa restaurant will begin, or when the Burger King will close.
Raising Cane’s will be among the newest additions to Harbor’s fast-food proliferation near the 405. In recent years, a Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Sonic, Flame Broiler, In-N-Out Burger and Five Guys Burgers and Fries have opened along Harbor within about a half mile of the freeway.
