Fashion Island Starbucks may get to pour beer, wine
Starbucks’ Fashion Island location could soon be offering patrons more than a caffeine buzz.
Newport Beach’s zoning administrator on Thursday will consider whether to issue a use permit to allow the coffeehouse to serve beer and wine from 4 p.m. until closing at 11 p.m.
It would be the first Starbucks location in the city permitted to sell alcohol, according to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
The Fashion Island shop currently is next to R+D Kitchen but plans to move to a 3,234-square-foot space now occupied by a clothing store. The current tenant would move to another space in the shopping center, according to a city staff report.
The Starbucks location also proposes to operate a 1,210-square-foot outdoor patio.
The Seattle-based coffee giant began rolling out beer and wine options, along with an expanded evening menu of small-plate items, to various locations nationwide, including Orange County, in 2012.
A Huntington Beach location and one in Rancho Santa Margarita have licenses to serve beer and wine.
