DUI driver who killed jogger gets 1 year in jail

A Costa Mesa man was sentenced this week to a year in jail and five years of probation for driving drunk and killing a jogger in Newport Beach last year.

An Orange County Superior Court judge handed down the sentence after Robert John Greaney, 23, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence with a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily harm.

The Orange County district attorney’s office objected to the sentence, arguing instead for a state prison term.

Greaney had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 on June 12, 2014, when he was driving a Ford F-150 along East Coast Highway, where he swerved into the bike lane near Morning Canyon Road, prosecutors said.

Greaney’s truck slammed into Edward Salkin, 81, and killed him, according to prosecutors.

In addition to alcohol, Greaney had “significant levels” of Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication, and marijuana in his system, prosecutors said.

Greaney also pleaded guilty Tuesday to an infraction for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana while driving.
