Police on Monday arrested a Costa Mesa man who they say had been hiding from them for more than a week after an attack with a “bladed weapon.”

Police would not identify the weapon but said Brandon Doherty, 30, severely injured a man’s left hand during the early-morning assault near Newport Boulevard and Vanguard Way on Jan. 31.

Emergency crews took the 28-year-old victim to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Since then, officers on evening and morning shifts had been looking for Doherty, said Lt. Greg Scott, spokesman for Costa Mesa police.

Detectives found the weapon, and just before 3 a.m. Monday, officers found Doherty hiding in a closet at a home in the 900 block of Linden Place, police said.

Officials declined to say what led them to the residence, saying their investigation is ongoing.

Officials booked Doherty on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held at Orange County Jail with bail set at $50,000, according to police.

Authorities are looking into whether Doherty is connected to more crimes, police said.
