Two men were killed when the van they were in careened off an Irvine freeway Monday night, according to authorities.

The 2000 Ford Econoline was traveling at least 65 mph on the ramp from the southbound 133 Freeway to the northbound 5 Freeway when the driver made an unsafe turn just after 9 p.m., causing the van to veer off the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Paramedics responded to a call about the crash at about 9:30 p.m. and found the vehicle resting against a tree that it had hit, said Capt. Steve Concialdi, Orange County Fire Authority spokesman.

Both men, one of whom was ejected from the van, were declared dead at the scene, Concialdi said.

Authorities identified the driver as David Borders, 47, of Ontario.

The Orange County coroner’s office has not released the name of the passenger, who the CHP said was a 50-year-old resident of Rancho Cucamonga.
