A former professional surfer from Newport Beach is facing three felony drug charges filed this month by the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Christopher Polovina, 35, was in possession of heroin, methamphetamine and Alprazolam — an anti-anxiety drug — when Newport Beach police arrested him Jan. 5, according to a criminal complaint.

The former pro is also charged with a misdemeanor count each of being under the influence of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.

Polovina made headlines in 2012 when he pleaded guilty in New Jersey to threatening his ex-wife. A judge sentenced him to four years of probation, according to court records.

On Jan. 7, Polovina pleaded not guilty to the most recent charges. He is free on $20,000 bond and is due back in Orange County Superior Court on Feb. 7.
