Police investigate 2 bar stabbings

Detectives are trying to uncover any connection between early-morning stabbings within a week at two Costa Mesa bars.

On Jan. 24, a man was attacked at Sutra nightclub on Harbor Boulevard about 12:30 a.m.

Police originally said the victim was injured in a group beating, but Det. Sgt. Ed Everett later explained that he was stabbed. Two other people were hit with bottles in separate incidents at the bar that night, he added.

Two of the victims were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with serious injuries, and paramedics treated the third at the scene.

Police said they’re looking for up to six attackers, described only as Asian men in their 20s.

On Jan. 19, a man from Anaheim was stabbed twice at the Commissary Lounge, on Randolph Avenue just off Baker Street, police said.

The victim left the bar with a group of friends and was confronted by a man who stabbed him with a knife, Costa Mesa police spokesman Lt. Greg Scott said.

Scott described the assailant as Asian, in his late 20s or early 30s and about 5-feet-5, with a muscular build and shaved head.

Paramedics took the victim to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange. He’s expected to survive, as are the victims from Sutra, police said

Police said they’re unaware of a motive in either case and added that they haven’t found any gang affiliations.
