Firefighters rescued a skateboarder who injured his spine and ended up stuck at the bottom of a 12-foot-deep skate bowl Thursday night at Volcom Skate Park in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

Crews responded around 8:30 p.m. and had to find a way to lift the injured boy out of the concrete bowl, according to Costa Mesa fire Capt. Joseph Noceti.

“Whenever you have to remove somebody at those angles, you can’t just manhandle them and bring them up,” Noceti said.

Firefighters angled a ladder to the bottom of the bowl and used it to guide a rescue basket in which the injured boy was lifted, according to the Fire Department.

The skateboarder was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries, Noceti said.
