Man arrested after knife-waving incident in Costa Mesa store
Police used a Taser to subdue a knife-wielding man at a Costa Mesa grocery store Monday, authorities said.
Officers arrested Angel J. Sandoval, 23, of Costa Mesa outside the Fresh & Easy at 3151 Harbor Blvd. around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a call about a man inside brandishing a 4-inch folding knife, police said.
Police said he walked up and down store aisles and waved a knife at an employee and a shopper, coming within two or three feet of them.
When Sandoval left the store, officers confronted him and told him to put his hands in the air, police said. Instead, authorities said, he walked toward an officer with his hands hidden near his waist.
The officer used a Taser on Sandoval and handcuffed him, police said.
The suspect was not injured. Officers found a folding knife in his pocket, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
Sandoval was booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a weapon, police said. His bail was set at $25,000.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the case call detectives at (714) 754-5637.
