He was a remarkable man. Born in Czechoslovakia, Mark witnessed the worst years of Communism and bravely escaped with his family to America in 1969. He came here with nothing yet created so much during his life. People who knew Mark called him a renaissance man. He valued order and precision. The medical devices he designed as an engineer are now used around the world, but even the simplest things he built at home were innovative, elegant and somehow improved by his precise and gentle touch. He also had a passion for learning and culture. He was fluent in three languages and sang and recited poetry beautifully in many others. He was always humble about his accomplishments, always patient, and always making peace. “Be kind to one another,” he told us. In the last month of his life, he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his marriage and the birth of his second grandson. He was thoughtful and lucid until his last breath, and, in the end, died as he lived, with dignity and courage. He will be terribly missed and always remembered by his wife Yana, their children Tomas Bridle and Monica Salter, and two grandchildren. To honor his love of books and learning, donations may be made to Newport Beach Public Library Foundation. A service will be scheduled.
