E. Avery (Pete) Crary<br/> August 18, 1939 - April 5, 2015
E. Avery (Pete) Crary, a long- time resident of Orange county, passed away peacefully of esophageal cancer Sunday April 5. Peter was born in Santa Monica, Calif in 1939 where he lived until he moved to Newport Beach, Calif in 1947. He attended Web High School in Claremont, graduated from the Foreign Service School of Georgetown University in 1961 and subsequently graduated from Southwestern Law School. He worked in the Estate Planning department of Meserve, Mumpher and Hughes for 50 years having been a partner for the last 43 years. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles Bar Association and the Orange County Bar Association where he had served on numerous estate planning committees and panels.
His favorite passion was sailing; having raced Snowbirds, Lehman 10’s and Metcalfs in the Newport Bay during his High School and College years. As time passed, he graduated to a Columbia 26 and a Morris, and in the most recent years, he loved sailing and working on his Harbor 20.
Gentle and soft-spoken, Peter was sage in advice, quiet in service and dedicated to his beloved sons and loving to his wife. He and his brother were a constant bond all their lives.
Peter was a life-long Episcopalian, and his most recent church affiliation was St. Mary’s of Laguna Beach, Ca. Throughout the years, he was a Deacon and a member of the Vestry and weekly Bible Study Group. Perhaps his most fulfilling work was the Stephens Ministry, an outreach program for those in need.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his beloved sons, E.A. Crary (Paul) and Matt Crary, his brother Oliver Crary (Cecilia), his niece Ashley (Laura), and two nephews Jud Crary (Nikki) and Taylor Crary and 2 great nieces and 2 great nephews.
A “Celebration of Life” Service is scheduled for Sat. May 9 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 428 Park Avenue, Laguna Beach, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, Peter requested that donations be made to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
