Fullerton students get new campus in Irvine

An estimated 2,000 Cal State Fullerton students will be attending classes next year at their new Irvine campus on Banting Road to make way for future development at their current campus on the site of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station.

Susan Cooper, dean of CSUF’s Irvine campus, said many of the students are looking forward to the move.

According to Cooper, not only will the new campus be more centrally located with its proximity to the San Diego (405) Freeway and the 133 toll road, but it will also be equipped with a fitness center, a library, a bookstore/café, two video conferencing classrooms, five computer classroom labs and 25 additional class rooms.

“Our location is going to be perfect, there’s going to be a lot of room to move around in,” Cooper said in a recent telephone interview. “We will be located a few blocks from the Irvine Spectrum Shopping Center and close to many local businesses, hospitals, restaurants and apartment complexes.”

Katy Doherty, a liberal studies major who lives in San Clemente, said she was thrilled.

“We’re going to be near the Irvine Spectrum,” Doherty, who’s been taking art classes and plans to teach it at the elementary level, said in a university news release. “I think it’s going to provide more accommodating options for students and faculty alike.”

Doherty said she was looked forward to being able to visit the Spectrum for lunch or dinner during class breaks.
