Cyclist killed by truck on Coast Highway
A truck struck and killed a bicyclist about 10:35 a.m. Friday at Bayside Drive and East Coast Highway, a Newport Beach fire official confirmed.
The woman, who was not immediately identified, was in her 20s or 30s, said Battalion Chief Jeff Boyles.
She was riding eastbound on Coast Highway when the stake bed truck ran over her, he said.
The bicyclist was wearing a helmet, said Sgt. Mark Hamilton of the Newport Beach Police Department.
The truck was traveling eastbound on Coast Highway and was making a right turn onto Bayside, Boyles said.
It was unclear whether the cyclist also was making a turn.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The driver of the truck remained at the scene, and the Newport Beach Police Department is currently obtaining statements from witnesses and investigating the cause of the collision,” Hamilton said in an email.
Earlier, at 7:19 a.m. Friday, a car struck a pedestrian at East Coast Highway and Jamboree Road. The victim was in a crosswalk when hit, Boyles said.
The victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
