Andrew won the 2012 Orange Empire Conference Decathlon Championship, scoring 6,480 points, which is sixth all time at Orange Coast College. He has qualified for the So Cal Championships, which were April 10 and 11. He is ranked No. 1 in the state. A top six finish will qualify him for the State Championships May 18 and 19.

Jessica was 1st team all-Orange Empire Conference, team MVP and team captain in women’s soccer. She was part of a record 15 shut-out games as a defender and scored the game-winning goal to upset the No. 1 team in the nation — Cerritos College — 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Jessica helped the Pirates advance to the State Elite Eight as the last-qualifying school (No. 16 seed).

CHRIS RAYBON

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Chris Raybon, a native of Winnfield, La., transferred to Vanguard from Mira Costa College. As a starting guard for the Lions, his senior season was his most successful, guiding the Lions to 15 wins, the most since 2007-08. Raybon led his team with total points (467), averaging 16.2 per game, total free throws (119) and total field goals (148), while placing second for the Lions in assists, steals and free throw percentage. Six times he scored 20 points or more, and once he surpassed the 30-point mark. Playing in one of the toughest conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Raybon was second among Golden State Athletic Conference players in scoring, sixth in assists per game and free throw percentage, and eighth in assist to turnover ratio. His overall performance has helped earn Raybon All-GSAC honors. Leading his team to the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08, Raybon was also recognized as an NAIA All-America Honorable Mention selection. Raybon has also been successful in the classroom and is a senior business major at Vanguard.

GABRIELA BERGMANOVA

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Gabriela Bergmanova is Vanguard’s Female Athlete of the Year for the second time in her three-year career at Vanguard, having shared the honor in 2010-11. A native of Czech Republic, Bergmanova is a second-year team captain on VU’s nationally ranked women’s tennis team, VU’s No. 1 singles player for the past three seasons, and an All-Golden State Athletic Conference and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics First-Team All-America player. She will most likely repeat those honors again at the end of this season. Ranked individually by the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn., Bergmanova was the No. 1-ranked female player in the NAIA in 2010 and No. 7 in 2011. In 2012, she is still undefeated in singles action at 16-0 and is No. 3 in the ITA/NAIA rankings. In three seasons as a Lion, she has combined for a 40-10 doubles record and has out-dueled her singles opponents 40-7 overall. Bergmanova will be irreplaceable on the Lion roster after she graduates with a degree in international business in 2012. She also carries more than a 3.7 GPA in the classroom and will earn her second GSAC and NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards this spring as well. She plans to seek a job in the world of business.
