NHHS Experience: My most memorable high school experience was definitely my year spent abroad in Lanzhou, China, during my sophomore year. The memory that has the most meaning for me was the two speeches I had to give in front of the entire school and all of the school dignitaries. Both had to be given in Mandarin, one at the beginning of the school year and one at the end of the school year. I had to read my first speech off note cards and still could barely do it, but by the end of my year, I gave an entire five-minute speech without any notes.

NHHS Experience: My most memorable high school experience was the six to eight hours I spent with SOS volunteers distributing free backpacks filled with school supplies to nearly 1,000 young students. Often, when adults came in for food or goods their gratitude was tempered with a sometimes embarrassed, self-conscious attitude, but on this distribution day, there was no mistaking the pleasure and excitement on the faces of the children and their parents, thrilled with shiny new backpacks, pens, pencils, rulers, etc. Little girls ran around, smiling and laughing, wearing backpacks three-times their size. Of course they were excited with their brand-new, “grown-up” gear and perhaps more importantly I think we were able to plant the seeds of a positive attitude toward education.
