Alarm triggers police call to Torii Hunter’s house
Angels right fielder Torii Hunter got a surprise visit at his Newport Coast home Wednesday not from an overzealous fan, but from police.
The Angels star said on his verified Twitter account that he was in his house when the alarm went off, and within 20 minutes he was visited by Newport Beach police.
Hunter wrote that when he went outside, police drew their guns.
“The cops that were here today had there guns drawn but pointed downward in for safety [sic],” Hunter tweeted. “Those guys handled the situation like trained cops.”
Hunter told the Los Angeles Times: “They said, ‘Put your hands up!’ I’m like, ‘Man, this is my home!’ They asked me questions about who I was. They asked me to go upstairs and get my I.D. The guns were out. I was a prisoner in my own home.”
Hunter said police walked him upstairs to confirm his affiliation with the team before leaving.
“When I showed him my ID, he said I’m an angel fan hope u guys have a great season. ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!!! Lol [sic],” Hunter tweeted.
Newport Beach police Sgt. Rachel Johnson confirmed that police responded to the home, but found that the alarm call was not associated with a crime in progress.
The Times reported that the alarm was set off accidentally by an open door in the house.
“[The police] did what they were supposed to, protected my home and did everything right,” Hunter said. “It was just an … awkward moment.”
The Angels begin regular season play Friday with a home opener against the Kansas City Royals.
