Security system upgrade approved
The Costa Mesa City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an upgraded security system for City Hall and a new one for Lions Park.
City Hall’s current system is 6 years old and consists of eight cameras and a digital recorder, according to a city staff report. Those cameras cover part of the lobby and the first floor’s hallways.
The new system would monitor areas of the parking lot and portions of all of City Hall’s floors.
City officials said the new cameras would not be monitoring employees’ desk areas.
The six cameras planned for Lions Park and the adjacent Donald Dungan Library are aimed to help deter illegal activity there and make the area more family-friendly. The Westside park is known as a haven for drug use and the homeless population.

Fairview Park boardwalk
The council also gave the OK for the design of a boardwalk through the recently restored wetlands at Fairview Park. The 1,300-foot boardwalk would cost $100,000 to design and $1 million to build, city officials estimated.

Mayor’s award
Mayor Jim Righeimer announced that he will issue a mayor’s award during each meeting. The awards and their recipients are “what make Costa Mesa great,” he said.
In addition, two maintenance workers from the South Pointe apartment complex on Baker Street were commended for their actions during a Dec. 9 fire. Arturo Hernandez and Gerald Rodriguez helped rescue two women from the fire and alerted other residents to the danger.
