Newport citizens’ police academy sign-ups available
Residents can now enroll in the next 12-week Newport Beach police citizens’ academy, according to police.
Participants learn from Police Department experts in SWAT, K-9, narcotics, patrol, traffic and firearms during the course of the academy. Demonstrations and a police ride along are part of the program.
The free program is open to anyone who lives or works in Newport Beach, has no felony convictions, does not have an outstanding warrant or pending litigation and is 21 years old or older.
The academy, which meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, runs from Jan. 24 to April 11.
Applications are available in the Police Department lobby and on the department’s website, or can be mailed upon request.
