Three motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after Laguna Beach police set up a checkpoint last weekend.

Officers stopped 872 cars along North Coast Highway near Irvine Cove between 9 p.m. Friday and 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

Police also cited 17 people on suspicion of driving on a suspended or revoked license, Capt. Jason Kravetz wrote in an email.

Checkpoints are placed in locations that offer the greatest opportunity for deterring drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol while also providing the greatest safety for officers and the public, the release said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies.

Laguna police said they plan to set up several more DUI checkpoints this year.

Police urge the public to call 911 to report drunk drivers.
