DUI checkpoints planned

Officers will hold checkpoints Friday in Laguna Beach at areas with high frequencies of DUI-related collisions and arrests, police announced in a news release.

“This is a zero-tolerance crackdown, so drive sober or get pulled over,” the release said. The checkpoint will start at 9 p.m. and go until 5 a.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Louise Callus.

Eighty-five people have been injured in 60 DUI collisions within Laguna Beach in the last three years, Lt. Jeff Calvert said in the release.

In 2010, 774 people died from crashes or collisions involving an alcohol- or drug-impaired driver in California, the release said.

The checkpoint program is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
