Surf shop sponsors Thanksgiving food drive

Starting this week, through Thanksgiving, surf apparel company Toes on the Nose is inviting everyone to donate canned food goods at the Toes on the Nose Laguna Surfshop deposit box for the Laguna Relief and Resource Center.

Donations from the shop will be used to provide a Thanksgiving feast through the Laguna Relief and Resource Center. The center provides assistance for homeless and low-income families including providing food banks, clothing and counseling.

“We believe that we need to come together as a community to help the homeless and Toes on the Nose Surfshop is doing just that,” said Donna Valenti, executive director of the Laguna Relief and Resource Center. “We couldn’t be more grateful and happy to see our community come together like this.”

In the spirit of the holiday, Toes on The Nose has recreated the Mayflower with canned foods donated by employees. Other materials such as paper plates, silverware and cups have been used to create the ship that is featured in the front window of the store.

To participate in the food drive, bring canned food items to the Toes on the Nose Laguna Surfshop, 276 S. Coast Hwy., Laguna Beach. For more information, visit https://www.ToesontheNose.com.

Gladstone article in crisis management book

A new book on crisis management features an article by crisis communications expert Joan Gladstone, president and CEO of Gladstone International. Gladstone lives in Laguna Beach.

The article, “Convincing CEOs to Communicate Quickly in a Crisis,” was published in PR News’ Crisis Management Guidebook, Vol. 4. PR News, now in its 62nd year, publishes books and publications for communications professionals.

“In my 16 years of crisis communications counseling, I’ve come to understand a seldom-discussed yet highly significant aspect of crisis management: the challenge of dealing with human nature during times of extreme stress,” she said. “The article provides specific steps for working with top management to achieve consensus before and during a crisis to protect the organization’s reputation over the long term.” The Crisis Management Guidebook offers chapters on media relations, reputation management, digital communications, litigation PR and more and is available at prnewsonline.com.

Gladstone’s crisis communications focus began in 1994 when she managed intense media coverage of the County of Orange bankruptcy, the largest municipal bankruptcy in the history of the U.S. Since then, she has managed national media relations and stakeholder communications related to labor strikes, foreign-object-in-food crises, environmental issues, political protests, regulatory agency investigations, property rights disputes, executive transitions and more.

In 2007, Gladstone was elected to the prestigious Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) College of Fellows. Entry to the College of Fellows, based on lifetime achievement, is a professional honor awarded to only 500 senior practitioners and educators worldwide in the past 20 years. She is also a 1997 recipient of the Orange County Business Journal’s Women in Business Award.

She frequently conducts workshops and seminars and recently presented a crisis case study to the Los Angeles Risk and Insurance Management Society and served on a crisis communications panel for the California Restaurant Assn’s Board of Directors.

Gladstone founded Gladstone International in 1989. She also serves as assistant professor of public relations and advertising at Chapman University in Orange.
