Art Talks continue at festival

Next week’s Art Talks will discuss artistic inspiration and art appreciation.

During Tuesday’s discussion, artists such as Janet Lewis, Michael Hermann and Gina Lunn will talk about what gets their creative juices flowing and help listeners embark on their own creative journey.

Irvine Museum Director Jean Stern will speak Thursday about appreciating art as an outsider and helping people avoid being intimidated by art just because they don’t have an artistic background. Stern is the author of a number of books on California Impressionism.

Art Talks take place from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Festival of Arts.

Camp Pinniped on deck at PMMC

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center may have a few spaces left in Camp Pinniped.

The summer day camp allows kids ages 8 to 12 to get hands-on learning about marine mammals, rescue and rehabilitation.

The campers will learn about marine mammal rehab through a series of mock activities, such as making fish smoothies, weighing fish and cleaning pens.

Each day has a unique itinerary to learn about the oceans and their sea life.

The cost is $295 per camper. Proceeds from the camp go to the medical treatment of the center’s sea lions and seals.

Back-to-school party is Aug. 20

The Woman’s Club, No Square Theatre and other local organizations are hosting a Back to School Party from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at the theater.

School supplies will be distributed to about 65 low-income students. Donations of backpacks, supplies and gently used clothing are still needed and can be dropped off at No Square Theatre from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 20.

Camp at Anneliese focuses on life cycles

SEEDS Arts and Education Inc. continues to host camps for children at Anneliese School’s Willowbrook Campus, including “Life Cycles in Our World,” which runs from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.

The camp is intended for first-graders and older and teaches kids about animal life cycles.

USSD team raises more than $1K at Relay

USSD Laguna Beach raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society during last weekend’s Relay for Life event at El Morro Elementary School.

It was the martial arts studio’s sixth time at the event. The studio brought a team of 20 to reach its goal.

“We’ve been a fixture in this community for over 15 years, and I feel very honored to be able to participate in important community events like Relay for Life,” owner and instructor Jeff Kash said in a statement. “For me personally, this event means a lot, with so many of my friends and family members affected by cancer.”
