Bank of America gives out $60K in grants

Continuing its support of art in local communities, Bank of America presented $60,000 in grants July 7 to the Art-A-Fair Foundation, Festival of Arts, Laguna Art Museum, Sawdust Festival and the Laguna Playhouse.

Those grants were part of the $290,000 Bank of America has provided to local arts nonprofits this year.

So far this year, 16 Orange County arts and culture nonprofits have received grants, including Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center, Orange County Museum of Art, Pacific Symphony, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and South Coast Repertory.

On hand at Bank of America’s local banking center to receive the check were Art-A-Fair Presidents Mike Cahill and Ron McWhorter; Festival of Arts President Fred Sattler and Marketing Director Sharbie Higuchi; Laguna Art Museum Curator of Exhibitions Grace Kook-Anderson; Laguna Playhouse Director of Development Amy Larson; and Sawdust Festival board liaison Gavin Heath.

Parking permits set to expire July 31

It’s time to renew residential, senior and business parking permits, according to City Manager John Pietig’s weekly update of July 8.

The current permits expire July 31, but new ones may be purchased beginning Friday at the City Hall cashier counter. Applications are now available on the city’s website. Residents may print out and complete the applications before heading to City Hall.

Trash triples over holiday weekend

On July 5, after the long Fourth of July weekend, the Public Works crew collected 120 cubic yards of trash from downtown, Main Beach, Heisler Park, Moulton Meadows Park and Alta Laguna Park, according to Pietig’s update. A normal weekend during the summer yields only about 40 cubic yards of trash from these same areas.

Unwind at Transition Laguna party

Transition Laguna hosts “The Great Unwinding” Summer Transition Party from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at Treasure Island Beach Park.

The day includes music, food and learning all about Transition Laguna initiatives. There will also be yoga, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming and more. Guests are invited to bring a dish to share.

Later in the evening, participate in the group’s full moon drum circle from 7 to 10 p.m.

Tax issues for nonprofits discussed

Laguna Beach nonprofits are invited to a free seminar on pitfalls regarding sales tax, raffles, lotteries and unrelated business income. The seminar, sponsored by the Laguna Beach Seniors and Laguna Beach Community Foundation, is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St., Laguna Beach.

CPA Robert Gamez will moderate, and two representatives of the California State Board of Equalization will discuss the issues and the need for sales tax reporting by nonprofits. The panel will also review 990 rules and bookkeeping.
