HIP District celebrates Independence Day

Merchants in Laguna’s “HIP” District — seven blocks of South Coast Highway between Anita Street and Blue Bird Canyon — will celebrate the nation’s most patriotic holiday, July 4, with special offers and events that will last through Monday.

Galleries, retail shops and boutiques will offer discounts for shoppers, like Blue-Eyed Girl at the Old Pottery Place, 1200 S. Coast Hwy., where designer brands will be 80% off from today to Monday.

Young scholars can bring their report cards to Laguna Beach Books at the Old Pottery Place and receive $2 in credit for each “A.” This special lasts until July 15 for graduates from kindergarten through 12th grade.

At Laguna Nursery, 1370 S. Coast Hwy., customers will receive a free 4-inch petunia with every purchase, plus enjoy a free lecture on home landscape design at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Vacationers can bring home a unique memento: an authentic lithographic print from Vintage Poster, which is offering 20% off custom picture framing.

At Laguna Coffee Company, 1050 S. Coast Hwy., holiday revelers can get a free, regular-size cup of “Made in the USA” coffee just by walking in and saying, “America rocks!” No purchase required.

Also at the Coffee Company, enjoy the Saturday Morning Jazz Jam from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., when the Swinging Quartet Laguna will play straight ahead jazz from the American Songbook. From 12:30 to 4 p.m., performers are invited to an Open Mic with Acoustic Rock, (no amplifiers). Any singer/songwriters interested in performing are welcome to play sets of up to four songs — if others are waiting.

Also on Saturday, guitarist Alexander Sack will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. the patio at the Old Pottery Place. Sack is a fine arts guitarist and twice recipient of the Andres Segovia Award for classical guitar.
