Alternative fuel trolleys roll out

The city’s summer festival shuttle service will continue through Aug. 28, City Manager John Pietig announced. The Laguna Canyon route will continue through Aug. 31, he said in his Friday update to city staff.

The fleet this year includes four more alternative fuel (propane) vehicles, bringing the number of alternative fuel vehicles to 18. The four trolleys will provide additional service to the heavily traveled north and south Coast Highway route and within the downtown, Pietig said.

Three of the four propane trolleys were purchased with the help of a grant from the Mobile Source Pollution Reduction Review Committee, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding and AB2766 Subvention Funds.

Shuttles operate from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. seven days a week. On Monday, the trolleys will stop service at 7 p.m. All the trolleys begin and end their routes at the bus depot on Broadway. City honored for Measure M support

Darryl Johnson of the Orange County Transportation Authority presented a proclamation to the city June 21 honoring its leadership in support of Measure M, a tax that pays for improvements in road and congestion-relief projects.

The tax provided $5.6 million for improvements in Laguna Beach during its first term. The second term was recently approved by the voters of Orange County.

“You will continue to see street and transportation improvements,” Johnson said.

Later in the meeting, the City Council unanimously approved the Seven Year Capital Improvement Program for street rehabilitation projects, which is necessary for Measure M Fair Share funding; adopted a resolution authorizing staff to file applications for Measure M Local Fair Share funds for street maintenance and improvements for fiscal year 2011-2012 and for Measure M competitive grant funds; and adopted a second resolution affirming city’s General Plan conformance with the County Master Plan of Arterial Highways.

Garbage, recycling service takes holiday

Trash and recyclable pickup by Waste Management of Orange County will be delayed next week so employees can celebrate Independence Day, according to a press statement from Waste Management. Both commercial and residential trash and recycling service will be delayed by one day. Customers in Laguna Beach should place their carts out for pickup one day later than usual beginning Tuesday through July 9.

League holds half price sale

The Assistance League of Laguna Beach will hold its annual storewide, half-price sale for all merchandise in its thrift store from Thursday to July 16, the league announced.

The shop is at 526 Glenneyre St. and open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
