Civil War author to speak
Glenna Matthews, local historian and Laguna Beach High School graduate, will speak at the Sunday service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship about her forthcoming book, “The Golden State in the Civil War.”
Matthews will focus on Starr King, who was honored for saving California for the Union, and his devotion to preserving human dignity for all people, including minorities. King’s statue was in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C., until it was replaced by one of Ronald Reagan.
A sandwich lunch and Q&A follows. The $5 donation will be used to provide for meals served by this congregation to the homeless at the new shelter. Services are at 10:30 a.m. at 429 Cypress Drive. All are invited.
Women’s rights workers to speak
JOY Ministry (Justice, Outreach and You) of Neighborhood Congregational Church will present two women who work globally to end discrimination against women and girls at 7:30 tonight, June 25 at athe church.
Pat McCully, Founder of Circulo de Amigas (Circle of Friends) in Nicaragua and Jane Roberts, founder of 34 Millions Friends of the United Nations Population Fund, will discuss their work and show videos. This is a free event to be followed by a reception at the church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.
